A compact featuring the widest lens on the market is among three new cameras released by Nikon today, each with a 1-inch sensor. The three compacts weigh in at different focal lengths which form part of their names, DL18-50, DL24-85 and DL24-500. Very imaginative, Nikon. All three include Nikkor lenses and the same basic specs; They all have the same 20.8MP one-inch BSI CMOS sensor and the new EXPEED 6A image processor.
Each camera is fitted with a Hybrid AF system, featuring 105 phase-detect with 171 contrast-detect points, meaning you can shoot at 20 fps with continuous autofocus. They're also capable of shooting 60fps when moved to single AF. All three are capable of up to ISO12800 and offer and 4K/UltraHD video recording at 30fps. WiFi and NFC are included across the board, as is a 3-inch touch-enabled OLED display. See below for a breakdown.
DL18-50
The DL18-50 has a focal length of (you guessed it) 18-50mm, giving it one of the widest lenses of any compact on the market. The lens has a three-stop ND filter and perspective correction is built in, which should help with architecture and landscape photography. It includes Nikon’s 'Nano Crystal Coating', which cuts down flare and ghosting. The seven-bladed shutter tops out at 1/1600 sec, although the electronic shutter can reach 1/16000 sec. The DL18-50 also includes full manual exposure control with support for RAW. An 18-50mm lens on a compact camera is certainly intriguing, and this model will be a strong secondary camera for landscape enthusiasts.
DL24-85
Next up is the DL24-85, with a focal length of DL24-85. This time around, we have a f/1.8-2.8 24-85mm equiv. but is missing the Nano Crystal Coating and ND filter found in its sister model. The focus here is on macro photography, with a minimum focus distance of just 3cm. Manual priority AF is included, as are focus peaking and bracketing.
DL24-500
Finally, the DL24-500 offers a monster zoom range with a 24-500mm equiv. lens, and a huge f/2.8-5.6 aperture range. Its two siblings have a tilting screen, but here the 3-inch OLED display is fully articulating. Video shooters will be happiest with this model, as it’s the only one of the three to include a mic input jack, with support for Nikon's ME-1 shotgun mic.
All three serve very different purposes, and each target a different type of photographer. In terms of pricing, the DL24-85 and DL18-50 will be released in April, at US$645 and US$800, respectively. The DL24-500 will ship earlier, in March, and should cost around $1,000.
