Overall conclusion

Just occasionally, the old cliches are still the best, and with the 18-200mm VR the phrase 'jack of all trades, master of none' springs immediately to mind. It's a lens which delivers somewhat flawed results over its entire zoom range; where it's sharp, it has heavy distortion, and when that distortion comes under control at the long end, it loses sharpness. Its close-up performance is reasonable, but not spectacular, and overall it will likely be outperformed optically by a cheaper combination of standard and telephoto zooms. So for a certain type of photographer interested mainly in absolute image quality, this may well cause it to be regarded as nothing more than an expensive snapshot lens.

But to dismiss the 18-200mm VR based purely on its optical quality is to miss the point quite fundamentally. The whole idea of such a lens is to allow the photographer to travel light and never miss a shot while changing lenses, or indeed not to have to risk water or dust entering the camera in adverse conditions. So what you do get for your money is a hugely flexible zoom range which can handle the vast majority of photographic opportunities, coupled with excellent autofocus and vibration reduction systems. And all of this is wrapped up in a relatively compact package, with build quality which feels solid without being excessively heavy. It really is a lens you can leave on your camera all day long and scarcely miss a shot, and it has to be said, this makes it a lot of fun to use.

So when all is said and done, we have to understand that superzooms are essentially about making some optical compromises to provide the broadest possible range in a single lens, and it's up to each individual to decide whether those compromises are acceptable. I wouldn't recommend the 18-200mm to someone whose primary interests were either architecture or wildlife, for example, but for the photographer who wants to shoot a little bit of everything and not have to change lenses, it's more than fit for purpose. Ultimately this is probably as good a superzoom as money can buy, so as long as its limitations are recognised and understood, it has to be recommended.

Overall conclusion

Tne 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G AF-S VR is certainly a worthy upgrade to Nikon's already well-regarded kit lens. The addition of the Vibration Reduction system, which seems equally capable as those previously only available on more expensive lenses such as the 18-200mm VR, greatly extends shooting flexibility into low-light situations which would previously have required a faster lens or tripod. And the optics are at least as good as before, meaning you'll get few nasty surprises when those precious images are viewed up-close on the computor monitor.

Indeed overall there's little to criticise about this lens given its entry-level price point, and the few faults it does possess are scarcely unique in its class. It's distinctly susceptible to flare in strongly backlit situations, so you need to be careful when pointing the camera in even the general direction of the sun; unfortunately the optional matched lens hood will only help a little here, and the rotating front element design precludes the use of a more effective petal-type hood. And the vestigial manual focus ring is only just about functional, which is annoying in those situations where autofocus fails to hit the desired mark. Like Canon, Nikon could learn a thing or two from Pentax and Olympus about doing these simple things properly.

But when all is said and done, it can't be denied that with this new VR version of the 18-55mm, Nikon have taken what was already a good lens and made it even better; it can't be overstated how useful VR can be in expanding photographic possibilities when using a camera handheld. Of course it won't help when you really need high shutter speeds to avoid motion blur, so don't expect it to perform miracles for indoor available-light people pictures, but it will help when you want to shoot in low light conditions and can tolerate slow shutter speeds. Indeed with the excellent high-ISO capabilities of modern dSLRS, VR will allow you to keep shooting in the fading light well past sunset.

So in conclusion, this is a small, lightweight and versatile lens, which deserves a place in every DX-shooter's bag, and earns a recommendation for sure.

Eu pensava que a 18-200VR entregaria resultado optico bem superior ao da 18-55mm e isso nao ocorreu, inclusive as bordas da 18-55 sao melhores e o centro quase igual. Eh isso mesmo?

Uma outra curiosidade de leigo, por que a melhor nitidez das duas lentes ocorrem na mesma abertura F8? com F11 chegando bem proximo.

18-70 sem a menor sombra de dúvida. Muito nítida, bom range e abertura em 70 de  f4.5. AF muito rápido...
Usei muito ela em eventos, aniversários e casamentos e sempre com ótimos resultados.
Faz algum tempo q comprei a Tamron 17-50 e que tem como grande vantagem a abertura fixa de 2.8 em todo o range. Nitidez, diria q é um pouco melhor, mas nada gritante.
A 18-70 vai ter dar muita satisfação.

Ando lerdo mesmo, lançaram a 16-85 3.5-56 VR. Só não gostei do 5,6 e do preço muito alto > 680 dólares.

Só o maior range, pois vai até 135mm.
Nunca tive contato com esta lente, mas dizem ser inferior a 18-70, esta sim uma lente já lendária. uma guerreira.

A 18-200 VR é uma lente muito boa... consegui ótimas fotos com ela!! É uma facilidade, pelo menos pra mim que só tinha a lente do kit da D70s.

Seria fantástico a 18-70 com VR.
Não sei como seria, mas teria que manter exatamente a mesma ótica, apenas com a adição do VR.
Pena que o preço dela subiria legal... No mínimo uns 35% a mais, não é mesmo?
